Mountainbike and other events in and around the areas we ride
We're guessing that some of you will have heard of Kaprun or Zell am See, maybe in a Winter Sports context but i'd be willing to bet not one person in a hundred will have heard of Dorf Tirol. UK riders will be very familiar with Wales but riders from other continents probably aren't.
So, we thought it would be a good idea to tell you about some of the MTB and other events within easy reach of where our tours are based to help you put them into context and maybe help persuade you to extend your time in the area.
Austria
Kaprun - Bike Infection 6 & 7 July 2007
Based right here in Kaprun we have a terrific MTB event with a difference. Bike Infection comprises a hillclimb race over 10km with 900m climbing, an urban XC race attracting major international XC names as well as amateur riders, made up of steps, water jumps and logs and also a trials show featuring Canadian trials hero Ryan Leech, multi World Champ Petr Kraus and Austrian meastro Thomas Oehler. The 2006 event was a great success and 2007 promises to be better still.
Over the Edge are proud to provide the English translation for the event website.
UPDATE : The weather was great, the event was awesome and I (Andrea) got to meet Ryan Leech !!!
Saalbach Hinterglemm - World Games of Mountainbiking 6 - 9 Sept 2007
The 9th World Games of MTB and comprises XC racing, DH racing and a fantastic marathon event with 3 different distances to choose from ranging from 31 to 80km. We'll be there on marathon day, if you want to join us, drop us a mail. Which distance we do depends on how much we still have in our tank !
Kitzbuhel - Kitzalpbike 30 June 2007
A great MTB marathon with 3 distance options and we'll be there doing the middle distance. With a 2000m climb over 45km that's plenty for us thank you very much!
UPDATE : A great event, we took our Aussie pro guest to give him a taster and he loved it ! We'll be back next year.
South Tyrol (Italy)
Latsch (Vinschgau) - MTB Festival Late October
This bike festival is where MTBers get together, new bike models are put through their paces, there are group rides and everyone has a great few days of MTB fun.
South Tyrol (East) - The Dolomiti Superbike Early July
This UCI World Cup MTB marathon is billed as the 'hardest MTB event in the Alps'. The short distance is 60.5km with 1785m of climbing and the long distance a breathtaking 119.78km with 3853m.
Meran - Traditional Grape Festival 20 & 21 October 2007
About 10 mins by car away from our base in Dorf Tirol this colourful parade through the town of Merano with town and village bands, decorated carriages and groups in traditional costumes - various concerts on the Kurpromenade.
Meran - Spring half-marathon Late April
A sporting challenge with participants from all over the world - the 21.5 km course between Merano and Algund/Lagundo leads past marvellously blooming fruit trees.
North & Mid Wales
Corbis nr.Machynlleth - The Dyfi Enduro Early May
This event which takes place in the Dyfi forest is probably one of the best MTB events in the UK calendar. At around 60km it's a mid-long distance affair with a moderate amount of climbing (but nothing like as much as the European events). It's more technical though, great fun and definately my favorite uk event.
Kington (Herefordshire) - The Rough Ride Early June
The rough ride is a 75km MTB event which covers around 2500m climbing with some great descents, and thanks to the generosity of local landowners, NO forestry roads. Although the event is timed, it is not really a race and follows the motto " we don't mind what speed you go, you're here to enjoy yourselves" . We like the sound of that, an event after our own hearts !
The National Eisteddfod of Wales (Music, Poetry,a Folk festival on a grand scale) Mold, North Wales 4-11 August 2007
Cardiff, South Wales 2-9 August 2008
This is definitely worth a visit. The Eisteddfod can be traced back to the year 1176 and since 1880 has taken place alternately between North and South Wales. Our August 2008 Wales Trails trip will take place either just before or just after the Eisteddfod to allow our guests the opportunity of extending their visit to Wales.
